Where Can I Put A Portable Farms™ Aquaponic System ?
The farm can go anywhere you can get basic 110  electrical or solar power......in most cases a heavy duty extension cord to a power strip is all you need.  You may want some kind of back-up plan should there be a long term power outage.   Because Portable Farms™ Aquaponic Systems  are small and compact, you can put them in your backyard, garage, basement, barn, porch, hoop house, driveway , rooftop (if it's flat),or greenhouse. The fish and vegetables can be grown in sunlight or with grow lights.

If you live in an apartment, condo or shared living environment, consider talking with your neighbors about finding a shared location (such as rooftop, extra parking area, side yard) and making it a group effort.  This is the kind of thing that brings people together, can change and enhance lives, is great for people of all ages and is good for the planet.  If this concept inspires you, I urge you to pursue it in some form or another.

In the past 90 days, Portable Farms LLC has received interest from universities, governments, NGO’s, churches, prisons, fraternal organizations, charities, public and private schools, commercial growers, community activists, companies, restaurants, builders, contractors, architects, philanthropists, families and individuals.

We envision the Portable Farms™ Aquaponic Systems  as an integral part of the home...........not just  a stand alone greenhouse in the backyard.  Your back porch or sideyard could be turned into a living, breathing
environment filled with edibles, flowers and solar energy ........add furniture and you have an addition that you will likely want to spend a lot of time in as well as harvesting good food from.  If that is appealing to you, give us a call for a consultation on how it might work.

Installation
When you purchase a Portable Farms™ Aquaponic System, the cost includes installation by a certified installer  and pricing may vary depending on site conditions, installer, greenhouse choice, location ect.

Greenhouse :  depending on your budget, there are hundreds to choose from on the internet and your installer may have suggestions about what might work best for you.    We have found that you get what you pay for and the home built hoophouses which are inexpensive but have a lot of problems so we do not advise using them. If you are looking for something longer lasting or more aesthetic and want a quote on a custom cedar greenhouse, or greenhouse addition to your building  to house your Farm, give us a call  1 888 894-4626.

Daily Farm Chores and Maintenance

Once your Portable Farms™ Aquaponic Systems  has been installed, the actual daily maintenance requires three to five minutes per day and makes a great family project that everyone of all ages can enjoy as they learn the values of growing  green , being connected with their food source and best of all, eating veggies that have some flavor !

No need to water your plants because a Portable Farm™ uses a one hour, twice-a-day cycle to circulate the water throughout the system so the plants constantly receive a fresh supply of warm, nutrient-laden water.

* No weeding is necessary.

* No pesticides or fertilizers are necessary.

* Your entire system can be Solar Powered and completely automated.

The main chores on the farm are :

  • The settling tank needs to be drained and cleaned approximately once a month and requires about twenty minutes of time. This nutrient laden water can be applied directly to trees, shrubs, flowering plants, or your lawn........... they will thank you for it !!
  • The biggest chore of the Farm is a yearly flushing of the grow trays which is done with a standard pressurized hose attachment.  The liquid that is flushed from the system is drained into a bucket which can be used to fertilized your plants.  A addition of earthworms into your grow trays will keep the build up of sludge to a minimum and may even alleviate it all together.
  • Some inexpensive componets of the system such as pump may need replacement after a year and I would advise all Portable Farmers to keep an extra on hand.  An replacement components can be purchased from your dealer or us.

Many authorized installers will be happy to set up a servicing schedule for your farm if you do not want to do it yourself.

Energy Costs

Using electrical grid power to run your Portable Farm™ is based on one 8 watt air pump, one small electrical pump, one timer, and two 150 watt heaters for 3.55 kw of electricity in 24 hours (this is a summer usage rate). The cost is $.35 per day for electricity, or $10.50 per month or $126.00 per year (based on rates from our local provider in San Diego, California).

If you choose to use solar power, you will need to size your solar panels to 180 watts and have two 12-volt storage batteries, plus an inverter to run pumps, timer and heaters.
